Social Media: Organic or Strategic

Social Media Organic or StrategicOrganic Social Media

You respond when initiated by others, you simply give opinions and go with the flow.  You participate as if you were at a family reunion or party, reaching out with little purpose or intention, you are organic and reactive.  Rather than proactive and purposeful – you give, you nurture and you wait, ever so patiently for a return on your investment of time and resources. If it happens, great.  If not, then you’re willing to wait it out.  After all, relationships take time.

Strategic Social Media

You have a plan, you’re thinking marketing, you know who you want to reach, who you need to reach and you’ve thought through the relationship to the end result, usually a measurable return on what you’ve given.  You give, you expect something in return or the relationship is of no value to you.

Social Media Purists

Want entirely organic, they believe you can’t be strategic about relationships.  They measure the value of conversations based solely on qualitative means, unable to truly understand how conversations are contributing to their business and goals.  Yet, they “know” deep in their hearts that social media is good.

Social Media Marketers

Want all strategy, they believe you have to be able to measure the return on your efforts.  Like the old days of traditional marketing if it doesn’t pay in measurable ROI, the cost is too high to participate.  They measure impressions, click-throughs, leads, sales, and other quantitative means.  They believe social media is good when the numbers say it is good.

Reality Check

Organic or Strategic?

Social media is both an art and a science.

You need to be able to be flexible and organic.

You also need to be strategic and targeted.

You can and should measure quality and quantity.

You can and should measure ROI.

Success for your brand, your business, and yes, your bottom line… requires both.
